1930年，妻子出现精神疾病。
1934年，出版《夜色温柔》。
1936年，病中撰写自传《崩溃》。
1937年，成为好莱坞编剧；与专栏作家格拉姆发生婚外情。
1940年12月21日，因心脏病突发而死，因此遗作《最后一个大亨》未完成。
